Our Mission:

Take the intimidation out of education

I got into teaching because our education system fails to prepare students for the challenges they will face in school & life.

Our Beliefs

Our Whistler & Pemberton tutors believe that learning should be fun & approachable.

  • We believe it is an educator’s responsibility to boost students’ confidence.

Self-esteem develops through interactions with family, teachers, and peers. Confidence grows when students try hard, see their progress, and learn new skills.

Self-esteem impacts a student’s likelihood to take chances and accept mistakes; skills that are vital for life-long learning.

  • We believe students should take ownership and accountability over their education.

Students who actively participate and take responsibility in their education show increased motivation and engagement.

Our Pemberton & Whistler tutors act as academic mentors. We guide our students as they navigate the educational system and take agency in their own learning.

  • The educators at High Altitude Tutoring believe there are as many learning styles as there are students.

Traditional classrooms don’t cater to the learning styles of more than half the student population.

We believe that matching our teaching methods to your student’s learning style is the best recipe for academic success.

Our Methods

High Altitude tutors help students recognize their potential & develop the skills to achieve it.

  • Students with a fixed mindset believe abilities are determined upon birth. A growth mindset teaches that abilities develop as a result of effort.

Our Whistler & Pemberton tutors teach students to embrace challenges with a growth mindset. We boost student confidence by supporting needs and celebrating all skills.

    Learning should be approachable!

  • Students retain information better when they interact with it and relate it to their daily lives.

We teach students to dive deeper into their interests by applying concepts they learn in school.

    Learning should be fun!

  • One-on-one tutoring and small-group lessons provide the perfect platform to personalize lesson plans to your student’s unique learning style, skills, and knowledge.

    Learning should be personal!

The Road to High Altitude Tutoring

I got into teaching because I recognized our education system failed to prepare students for the challenges they would face in school & life.

When I taught a first year course during my Master’s at Queen’s University in 2017, more than half the class failed their first basic writing assignment. High school did not teach them the time management, organization, and study skills they needed to succeed.

In 2018, I started my first tutoring company, Tutoring With Jayme, while backpacking South East Asia and New Zealand.

I provided virtual writing coaching sessions to high school and university students, specializing in university admissions, and supported many of my students through the completion of their degrees.

In 2019, I travelled to Guatemala to teach English, work with educators from around the world, and immerse myself in unfamiliar international pedagogy.

While my love for the mountains brought me to British Columbia in 2019, it was through tutoring in Whistler & Pemberton that I decided to settle down and make this community my home.

As I continued to teach, I recognized a consistent failure of our educational system to create a space for students with unique learning needs to thrive.

These systems, which have not evolved as quickly as our youth, damage the confidence of students who learn differently.

This led me to reflect on my own experiences with education as a child… I was different from the other students in my class and dreaded attending school from the 1st to 7th grade.

My teachers thought I didn’t try hard enough, my peers mocked me, and spending 40 hours a week in an environment where I felt worthless chipped away at my confidence.

At the end of grade 7, I was diagnosed with ADHD and my parents learned about my unique learning needs.

I got a tutor, switched to a school with more support, and learned about how my brain functions.

I realized that I was capable of things that I never thought possible, and went from the kid who hid in the bathroom during math to a Chancellor Scholar at Queen’s University.

Learning had become fun again and I was excited to go to school! I got back the confidence that was taken from me by a system that did not understand my unique learning needs.

Having experienced the difference that a supportive learning environment can make first-hand, I designed High Altitude Tutoring to address the unique needs and learning styles of students in the Sea to Sky.
